Came across this on another board and it is certainly worth reinforcing.

My 1st response was pretty much the same as the "Dude! I almost puked !!! " reply . . . Yeesch !!!
I can remember crashing in the Waco Wild West Century back in the dark ages (circa 1990). I landed on my shoulder, rolled over onto my head and had somebody land on top of me and grind my head . . .er - actually my helmet . . . into the pavement. I still remember the thought going through my brain as I listened to that KKCCccccchhhhhh sound of my helemt being ground into asphalt: "Man! Am I glad that's not my skull !!!" was what I was thinking. I vowed that day to never ever again get on a bike without a helmet and I'm glad I haven't. A couple of years ago, I T-boned a loose dog, endo'ed with a twist, and whip-lashed the back of my helmet onto the pavement so hard that I felt it crumble around my skull. The helmet was destroyed but did it's job in keeping my skull from being destroyed. You never know what can happen out there in the real world. Your helmet - don't leave home without it.
