I don't know the seller, but these are sweet - that is almost exactly what I am running, since October 2010 - I have about 13,500 miles on them. They have been straight and true.

In Topic: weekend Group Rides around Clayton and Ladue?

16 May 2013 - 03:04 PM

Chris - there are a few, you may have to dig around in this website a bit. But here are two well known rides you could join:

The Hub (on Lockwood in downtown Webster Groves): Saturday, 7:30 AM start, about 28 miles, 19 - 20 mph overall average

Knucklehead (on parking lot at the Northeast corner of Clayton and Hanley, in Clayton), Sunday, 7:00 AM start. There is a short route  (40 miles?) and a longer route (65 miles?). Pace is casual (17 mph) for about the first hour, then ups to about 20 the rest of the way.

The last one is the Big Shark ride that leaves from Big Shark on Delmar in University City. You would have to call the shop, I don't know the details.

Hey Chris - thanks for the reply. I think I have fixed the mapmyride link - it is now public, so you should be able to see it. Agree, the MO side parking has had problems, which is why I have us starting on the ILL side.

My route does follow what is called "Levee Road" on the island down to the locks, but I think what is labeled Levee Road on the island is the bike path.

Nothing wrong with that route - I have been on every one of those roads. But you cross some major streets and / or turn left at several unsignaled intersections; I try to avoid that as much as possible. This is how I would go from Shrewsbury to Westport (route) - admittedly longer (by one mile), but I can confidently say that all left turns (or anything that I would call a major intersection) is signaled (except maybe the last two lefts - I simply can't recall). I have also ridden my bike on all of these roads, even the short section on Olive.

Interesting route, especially the stuff towards the northwest.  I've never ridden those roads and am interested in giving it a shot.

Two changes I would make for myself:

1. not riding on Berry in the morning--it's two lanes and, as recently as December, crappy surface.  I'd prefer Brentwood all the way to Litzinger or to Manchester then over High School to Litzinger.
2. rather than taking Warson all the way to clayton, turn on litzinger and head out to Lindbergh, then north to Clayton and make the left.  This saves you from having to do a few hills in morning traffic, and lindbergh is also multiple lanes.  The volume on that short stretch is not so huge that you'll be swallowed, and it's still a protected left turn onto Clayton.

Agree these are good choices too. Berry can get busy at times (there is a middle school there, for example). The point on Litzinger is also good - you are trading a few hills on Warson for a busy stretch on Londbergh. Again, I have done both, and neither troubles me much in terms of traffic. I this this is Cleeland's suggested route.

It may be less ideal for the return, although I have done essentially that route several times, too.

While I have not done either during rush hour, I would not be concerned.
