surly cross check is another good option, and can be ran as geared if need be. it's the most versatile bike i've ever owned. skinny tires. fat tires. fenders and racks. lots of gears. one gear. whatever you want it to be.

Im pretty sure it's the same golf course the usgp used to be held on. Not much elevation change that I can recall, it's flatter than Eva Bandman. There was an earthen stair/rr tie run up, and lots of sand pits that had significant drop-ins. But not much climbing.

Yup. Chicago cross is worth the drive. I did the double race weekend at Hilton Indian Lakes resort last month and it was a blast too. But the state champs at Montrose Harbor is always an experience. Challenging course, great backdrop, great crowds, and solid competition. Sticking around until the end of the day and watching the two cat4 races is a must as well.
