I believe unattached racers are supposed to wear a plain white jersey.  This could be a T shirt but should have sleeves.  That and a black pair of shorts would work.

Seeing as I'll be reffing tomorrow, just make sure he has a jersey w/ sleeves (ie: no sleeveless shirts). Rules require a "neutral" shirt and shorts (ie: no adverstising or team logos that you're not affiiated with), but as I recall, we've had plenty of professionals racing the mighty C's in the past, with Discovery, Garmin, etc all having been spotted in the pack. Best bet: plain T-shirt and black shorts.

Also, just as a reminder, a helmet, and no TT bars, please. Would hate to have to turn someone away at their first TNW. Bring lots of water, and safe racing!

You could also loan a jersey. For that matter, get a collection of old primal wear stuff in various sizes and offer as loaners at tnw.

Just curious, why a plain jersey for those unattached?

So you don't waste time wondering if they are working for a teammate, employing team tactics, which are seldom seen in B and C races.  Or wondering if that guy in the RadioShack outfit is really a pro, and feeling embarassed for calling him out for racing the B's.

Rulebook doesn't always address motivation or intent. But, based on what's in the rulebook, and because cycling is a team-sport, and based on interpretation of similar questions/issues by other officials nation-wide, I would say that (1) it's to make sure everyone knows who's on which team, and (2) to protect (and encourage) sponsor relationship with teams.

If anyone has more definitive interpretation, feel free to post.

Edit: conversely, riding w/ blank jersey when you ARE part of a team should also be a no-no, but it is only mandatory for Cat2 and up, oddly enough.

Not that racing with the correct jersey is enforced with the Cat 2 and up, either.
