I am in need of a new rear derailleur and I am curious if the red is worth the extra money or if it is all about the weight. Do you need different controls. currently using rival group

thanks

No you don't need new controls (shifters you mean?). All of the sram groups work together.

Without knowing that you have a red derailleur on the back it is pretty much impossible to tell the difference between red, force or even rival. There is a difference in shifters because red are zero loss pull.

Buy the best you can afford, red is about weight.

The only difference is red has ceramic bearings in the pulleys and force doesn't.

Yep definitely the way to go. But the really new red shifters won't work with a force dérailleur. You will need the still good but now older red shifters. Check the compatibility chart on SRAM.com.
