I have ridden the trails of Belleville, Madison County, the RFT, Creve Couer, part of the Katy, Forrest Park, Des Peres Greenway and Grants trail.  Thought about going out to Lone Elk Park and tooling around there but I just don't know if it is worth it - I not only want to see interesting things I want to get a workout as well and a few miles won't do that.  Any suggestions would be appreciated

Do you have a trail-worthy mountain bike?  Chubb trail starts in Lone Elk Park, and I don't know of any better workout anywhere!  (Be ready for some technical stuff, though, and one climb up a rock "staircase" I've never seen anybody make, even in a race!)

Klondike and Brommelseik in St. Charles county are great places to ride, too -- tons of great options around StL area, especially with a mountain bike!

Hope you have a good time with it

I have a hybrid but the 28c's I doubt can handle chubb - Maybe headout towards Scott and do a loop of that have some food out there somewhere then come home.  Need to look at the BABES web site again they have several routes mapped out

Went to Lone Elk Park  um not a good place to ride a road bike lots of crazy hills and the down hills are kind of crazy with hairpin turns etc  I caught a tire on a uphill and down I went scraped my knee, elbow and burst open a finger.  I did enjoy the bison, deer and elk viewing though.  Really didn't get enough miles in after my fall.

Did you ride through the bison area?  I didn't think that was allowed.

Um no I thought that to be a lose-lose  First it is signed no bikes and the cattle gate on the entryway would make bike tires cry.  Pretty sure the bison can run faster than I can pedal - one of my friends suggested I change the story to a Bison attack instead of falling on my ar_e - Think if I had been riding faster the branch would have been little more than a bump. Feeling it today for sure

Check out some of these trails:

They may be more visually interesting in the spring and fall, but still fun places to ride a bike.  What part of the Katy did you ride?  You could always ride the train out west and pedal home or vice versa.

Thanks for the suggestion I will check it out.  I rode from Creve Couer Park to the Katy then on into St Charles.  I have a trip planned for the fall from one end to the other so I am trying to not to do any other than that this year

I just got back yesterday from a 5-day end-to-end on the KATY. Good times. I highly recommend the Missouri DNR sponsored ride as they have support and planning down to a science. Sign-up for 2013 starts on 1 March 2013.

Looking for somwhere adventerous? Head South.  There are thosands of miles of nearly traffic-free gravel roads to ride in the Ozarks.  Washington and Crawford counties in Missouri are your closest options.  But you'll still be driving 1-2 hrs to get to some good spots.  Lots of great scenery, steep hills, and other interesting things.  Just bring a good map.  I like the MoDOT county maps.  Or the Mark Twain National Forest maps if you'll be riding forest roads, which aren't shown on the MoDOT maps. I think riding gravel roads are far more interesting than the flat, somewhat boring Katy.

Do NOT ride through the BISON AREA !!!! It IS signed NO BICYCLES !!! (so I was told after the fact.....) The cattle gates are no problem for bicycle - I bunny hopped right over those (thus missing the sign while ripping through there at speed).  The bison, however, have a rather intense distain for bicycles - especially during the rutt. I (and another cyclist) who both missed the [No Bicycles] sign were both fortunate to be resuced by cars.  Me - perhaps 2-3 inches before the bull out there took his horns to my bicycle and person.  I'm NOT making this up - and I am not exaggerating.  I could have patted his head if I were so inclined. DO NOT ride out there !!!  I'm happy to have lived to tell about it....and I still change the channel on the TV if so much as a "when animals attack" commercial comes on.  It was NOT a memorable experience.....

...errrrr....actually it WAS a memorable experience.....but one I would really rather forget.  It's been almost two years now and I still struggle with the memories.....

Here's a video that should hammer home the point, keep out of the buffalo area of Lone Elk with a bike...
