Can I just buy new chain rings, or is the size of the spider different in the cranks? Can I buy the red rings?

Thanks!

Standard is generally 130 BCD
Compact is 110 BCD
I am sure you can find 52/36 rings with 110BCD to use with your compact crank

Generally, the compact cranks are more "in demand" as for-sale items.  You could probably sell your compact setup, buy a standard setup, and maybe keep a couple of dollars, to boot.

If you're looking for rings, I would very much not recommend that Red 52... The Red rings are way too flexy as it is, and that 52tooth/110bcd is just going to have more room to flex. Your front shifting will likely suffer. Take a look at Praxis or Shimano rings.

I have read the same thing. All I can find in a 110BCD and a 52/38 or 53/39 is Stronglight rings or Zephyr rings. It doesn't look like Praxis makes anything larger than 50/36 for a compact. From the forums, it looks like people that have used the stronglights in a 52/38 or 53/39 on a 110BCD were happy with them, no reports of drops or mis-shifts. Any thoughts on these two manufactures, I know nothing about them. Thanks for the help.

Non helpful response: ride more elevation instead of getting a standard crank! :P

just make sure you get the "sprint" red rings and you will be fine.  look for SPR in white on the back of the chainring. i think it is their standard ring now.

Scott, I will check that out. I emailed Praxis and they told me they will have a 52/36 by June.

I run a 52/36, 110BDC "compact" with no shifting problems(Red), but I do have the "newer" rings, and while I'm not a gear masher, I'm no "flyweight" .
FSA makes a 53t/110bdc, but havent tried it.
Only after cat'n up, do I see a need for a 53-54 in crits , found myself wanting "1 more gear " on the straights during the Grove....

Thanks for the info Mike, looks like I have some options. Won't be doing anything until next season.

50x11 is taller than 53x12 so if you only have a 12t on your cassette you can buy something with an 11t for less than a set of rings. Just another possible option.

I do already have an 11, so no problem there, but it is a 28-11, I will be getting ride of that for a 23-11
