I think you might get good instruction for free, and you might get bad instruction for $100.  It really depends.  In any case, having another person there to watch what you're doing and give you feedback will accelerate things.  Having somebody who knows "good" technique and the pros/cons of different techniques will help you.  You can definitely assemble all of this yourself from various sources, or short-cut it with an experienced person.

One thing I've found personally is that I need the skills practice before the season every year.  Granted, each year it gets a bit easier as a refresher, but doing your personal clinic this time of year, when there are no races in which for you to "test your mettle" may end up being wasted time/money.  Doing this in July/August would probably serve you much better.

I base my belief on my own experience learning martial arts.

. . . having practiced a martial art, I can see where you are coming from.  only comment would be the culture of cyclocross is about 180 opposite of martial arts.  Think noisy loud cowbell clanging Belgians guzzling beer to stay warm in the winter.  I guess this is part of the evolution of the sport, grown men and women make their living racing cx now so no problem paying someone for instruction, why not?  plenty of fine cx racers in the area.

Great instructor, great choice.  Classy guy won't even take my money no matter how much I insist.

^^Does that mean you found someone?

Though it is a few months away, I was going to mention the CX clinic that Team Rev does. Carrie C. knows her stuff, and is a great instructor as well. Watch out for it on the calendar (early Sept??).

Carrie Cash Wooten is a great instructor, but, err, she's a woman, so bring your wife along so she can join the fun. It's easier to feed the Cross addiction if you are both hooked.

Carrie Cash is a great instructor, PERIOD.  Gender doesn't matter for a great teacher.  The clinic is open to men and ladies.  It's scheduled for 8/25/12 this year.  I've done the clinic twice and learned many, many valuable lessons from Carrie and all the instructors.

Suze, you're right, gender isn't a factor that's applicable to being a great teaacher.... except that the requirement of the OP's wife was that he select a male instructor.....
