Does anyone know of an alternate to the levee trail heading to Alton that avoids the up and down and gates? there has to be something parallel to Route 3 that will take you up to Alton and avoid that constant up/down/dismount/restart hassle on the levee.

Route 3 has a pretty wide shoulder.  It would probably be okay to ride on, assuming there's no rumble strips or obscene amounts of glass or debris along it.  If you follow that to the last intersection before 143, (it's just labeled Amoco Cutoff on Google Maps) make a left, then right on the trail, that is the last gate you have to deal with.  Or you can pick up Delmar Ave (right on Piasa, left on Delmar) just north of New Poag Rd., which parallels Rte. 3 through Hartford and then cross Rte. 3 and get back on the trail at the Amoco Cutoff.  It would be nice if they could open those gates the day of the ride.  Talk about Momentum killers!

There is Old St. Louis / State Aid/ S Main road that runs parallel to rt 3 through hartford down to the last levee road at Amoco Cutoff.  Or, you can ride the shoulder, it is pretty wide.  Delmar may be ride-able from the Piasa all the way to Hartford;  have never tried it.  Google maps shows all these roads.

Old St.louis road is closed right now for construction at Hartford.I believe Delmar is open all the way through.

Great weather. I had 4 miles added in the hilly part of Calhoun County. The police had the road blocked due to a fire.

I wonder how many people did the ride. There were so many near me that the ferry couldn't take all the riders due to a lack of life jackets.

Great ride.

I heard there were over 600 total.  Kudos to the operators of the Golden Eagle Ferry for having both boats running, unlike IDOT at Brussels.

Eagle Ferry (privately owned),  Brussels Ferry (state owned).  Illinois is broke.  See who does the better job of management and still makes money.
