My 20 y/o wants bike shorts for her birthday next month.  Who makes the better/best women specific bike shorts?  Any of you ride in skorts, is that much of an option?  She's currently happy riding her 25 pound 'mountain' bike on the street.  With good shorts maybe that will change to wanting a decent road bike. What are your recommendations?

Thanks,

Dad

I'm a huge Pearl Izumi or Hincapie fan.  However, just like with men's shorts, it's a personal preference thing.  I would suggest a gift card to one of the LBS that have a great selection and let her pick them out.  That way she can decide if she wants the looser style shorts or the typical road short.  If she wants a more "fashionable" option, take a look at terrybicycles.com.  They have the skorts and wraps and I've heard great things about their gear.

+1 on the gift-car-let-her-pick-them-out approach.  I bought my first several pair online, sight unseen, and got lucky.  My next several pair did not turn out so great.
