Once is while - I just go ahead and ride a 100 or more miles. I wonder if anyone else does this sort of thing, and if and when they would want to just go and 'do it' - instead of the whole organized ride deal?

I will do it but I certainly like the extra benefits of an organized Century Ride, or Fondo for that matter.  Just the fact that there are some structured water stops, nutrition along with the "critical mass thing" makes it safer and more enjoyable.

I find that the organized Century's in our area to be very reasonable from a price prospective and do give you those little extras.

The St. Louis Biking Meet-up group has a very loose century a month club.  They may do it next month or they may not kinda loose.  Typically 6-12 riders meet somewhere and ride 100+ miles with stops when people get tired/hungry/etc. The route can change as the ride progresses although they will predict when they will be at a location if others want to join in at that point rather than the starting point. Generally for self sufficient riders I believe though I expect they would show you how to change your flat if you have your own tube and tools.

A couple of times I've done the Century a Month Challenge thing. The last time it was in 2006. As you can imagine, there are a few months there aren't any organized centuries around here so I did them solo. Columbia, Illinois MarketPlace to Prairie du Rocher on Bluff Rd; out to Fort Chartres on 155; back to Prairie du Rocher; south on Bluff Rd to Hwy 3 near Ellis Grove; then back north to Columbia through Prairie du Rocher again. It's about 99 miles so you need to get lost about a mile somewhere.  

The grocery store in PdR is a good place to stock up as there's nothing else except for a soda machine at the grainery near Maeystown and a water spigot at the baseball field in Old Valmeyer that may be running. Bathrooms are all closed except for some fancy outhouses at Fort Chartres.

Dang! Same day at the 5-Star Sandy Creek Hilly Challenge. However I might just do your great ride again. Sandy Creek kicked my rump badly last year and I swore that I wouldn't do it again. Of course that's what I said the year before......
