Hi, I just moved out here about a month ago and was just wondering if people rode fixed gear bikes in STL? And if there were any weekly rides or something i could head out to? thanks :)

Thursday nights at A&M are gold sprints, and then Thursday Night's at Penrose Park Velodrome starting in May, TRACK NIGHT. That's the only fixie that matters mang..

Sometimes on Fridays we meet up on the Alton bridge and drink PBR, talk about how lame everything is, wear jeans two sizes too small, and jump off it.

But most of the time you just post ignorant posts on web boards railing on other people for having different interest than you... Have you thought about taking up cycling advocacy? You seem very encouraging.

There is this thing called the full moon fiasco, put on by the FBC (*ucking bike club) their rides leave from turtle park (tamm and oakland) every full moon at 10pm. It's a MASSIVE pub crawl that can be very fun. Right now is the best since it is so cold... During the summer, every college student on the planet brings out their wasted huffy and they try to get aggressive with cars. People like Paul may hate on it, but it is a good time. Undeniable. There aren't a lot of fixie only rides that happen. I mean, some racers like myself go out on road rides with fixed gears, but the "fixie scene" by in large either happened and is over, or hasn't caught on at all. Some kids do ride them, but now I think they are getting into mopeds or something.

Maybe you can get your own ride going and really piss some people off.

cheers,
-robert

Hostile thread.

I guess I should have said, "Sometimes we don't have brakes." instead. That way people didn't get confused. :D

I love my fixed gear. I love riding it places. The morons who ride around in tight jeans with no brakes and talk about fixies, however....ugh.

I hear you. Everybody should have brakes. Although I like to look at it like Darwinism. Some folks ain't gonna make it. Saint Louis is lucky. Portland was filled with it.

It also bums me out when hipster kids with track bikes talk a big game, but just quite can't seem to make it on the track. What's up with that?

At the risk of marginalizing myself as a square... no brakes in the street is very uncool. Even if you're the worlds greatest bike handler, and you're only in a 60" gear you will not be able to stop. I can skid my rear tire, n.p. But in a panic-stop situation, nobody without brakes is stopping, they are going to simply go for it... and how bad does that make everyone look when people are blowing through a major intersection, or slamming into pedestrians or something... Skidding is all fine and dandy, but something about putting all your weight on your front wheel when someone pulls out in front of you just screams that you're going to do a face plant.

I can't think of any rides where not having brakes is acceptable, minus the pub crawl I mentioned. Cars do not yield for you like they do in other bike friendly cities, sometimes they wave you on, but sometimes if they have the chance to hit you, they will. I would suggest not giving them the chance. I rock two brakes. Cuz I'm fast and train my legs to propel the bike forward. I've heard people say incredibly ignorant things like "you don't know how to ride a 'fixie' if you have a brake!" and "track bikes weren't meant to have brakes" Yeah, duh, they also weren't meant to be abused in the street, they were meant to race on a velodrome around other brakeless track bikes.

Aside from my own biased tirade. Brakes here in missouri are the law and while cops aren't writing citations for it, it is just like wearing a helmet. You should wear one whilst palping a brake...maybe two.

Anyway, that's my safety first speech.
keep it real.

There are a ton of group rides for all skill and speed levels. It's probably best if you just hook up with your local bike, find something that's close to you, then try it out to see if its a fit. Like Robert mentioned, there is really only one group fixie ride, the FBC fiasco rides.
