It seems to be typical trolling for this time of year.  On a different forum you wouldn't believe the argy-bargy over this guy posting these pictures

Cool bikes.

You would be amazed at the clarity you can achive with cameras that only moments before were blurry.  Avoid letting the camera decide for you and force it to it's best resolution and outdoor lighting.  Some times you just have to select sports/action, setting other cameras allow you specify everything.  Sounds like the camera might have given you indoor portrait or low light landscape because it was in auto mode.

Just curious...what kind of cameras are in use?

I personally have two video cameras--an older (10 year old) Sony Hi8 and a newer (2 year old) Panasonic MiniDV.  If I could rely on them being well taken care of during a race and any damage rectified, I'd be happy to loan their use.

For my own curiosity. is there a test of the videocamera(s) done before the event starts to see if the numbers are readable from the camera position.  Seems like it would be relatively easy to get a couple riders to do a short sprint or two and determine whether the camera or its position needs to be adjusted.  I'm just throwing out ideas that might prevent future complaints with the current technology.

A standard video camera will not be able to capture high-speed motion with enough clarity to recognize numbers.  Without going into all of the technobable a frame of ntsc video is 1/30th of a second, in which time a bike at 30mph would have traveled approximately 1.5 feet.  this 1.5 foot distance is viewed as motion blur.  add to that, most cameras are still interlaced, meaning that to still a frame it has to match upper and lower fields to simulate a single frame.

Without any research i would think that cameras at large races are super high speed.  shooting 120 frames and up per second. and even then you can see times when it is hard to tell who won.

with that said, video should used only as a backup.

nothing is going to be perfect, but the chip technology might be as close as we are going to get.

this discussion sounds like a coed softball league.  at the end of a race you can't blame it on the bike, official, other racers, you either had a good race or not.

why don't we get some of those best buy door things and all put sealed dvds in our jerseys.

USA Cycling should yank the license of any dipsh*t that makes a comment like the "don't put on races if you can't........"        Idiot.
Not to mention, people don't put their numbers on correctly half the time, so cameras don't always help.

It's all cool people and there are no bruised feeling here. FatSlowandstupid asked a legit question and I should have responded in kind. I choose to add a funny, in anticipation of fallout due to results. There's no need to rake him over the coals. These forums can be a hard place to live as there is no semantics to go along with the syntax.

F, S, & S points out a basic problem with the written word, and that is that it is by definition always out of context.  In other words, if someone was standing there telling him that the fifteen minute waiting period was over (a week ago) and then giving him a little wink or even a pat on the shoulder, then it wouldn't seem like a smart-ass response.  But when it's posted here, then for all you know the poster is not winking, but instead flipping you the bird while he says it.

We've all felt this, and you just have to thicken up that skin a bit.  None of this would sound so bad if you had the advantage of looking the person in the eye.

I think we need a new camera.
