For my own curiosity. is there a test of the videocamera(s) done before the event starts to see if the numbers are readable from the camera position. Seems like it would be relatively easy to get a couple riders to do a short sprint or two and determine whether the camera or its position needs to be adjusted. I'm just throwing out ideas that might prevent future complaints with the current technology.
A standard video camera will not be able to capture high-speed motion with enough clarity to recognize numbers. Without going into all of the technobable a frame of ntsc video is 1/30th of a second, in which time a bike at 30mph would have traveled approximately 1.5 feet. this 1.5 foot distance is viewed as motion blur. add to that, most cameras are still interlaced, meaning that to still a frame it has to match upper and lower fields to simulate a single frame.
Without any research i would think that cameras at large races are super high speed. shooting 120 frames and up per second. and even then you can see times when it is hard to tell who won.
with that said, video should used only as a backup.
nothing is going to be perfect, but the chip technology might be as close as we are going to get.
this discussion sounds like a coed softball league. at the end of a race you can't blame it on the bike, official, other racers, you either had a good race or not.
why don't we get some of those best buy door things and all put sealed dvds in our jerseys.
