Agree with Aaron.  The best comparison is perhaps Greentree.  In other words, it is an anaerobic shootout.

Greentree is a bit more extreme, imho.  Sylvan's climb is a bit shorter, and not immediately followed by another upwards tilt in the road.  I actually enjoy the sylvan course, and dread the greentree.

This crit is a lung buster going either way.  A challenging course, early in the season.  And the am races can be chilly.

From what I understand, if the race has 100 people, they will cancel the race.  Holy crap, wouldn't want there to be too many people registered.  It would be better if maybe there were 15-20 people in the 3/4's race.  Be a man, race the 1,2,3's race.  Don't cry.

Earl (thats short for early for all you hoosiers out there)

Since you're late you might want to be early!   LOL. Oh kill myself.  I don't think numbers will be a problem. This is our 3rd year and the first year we had 37 and last year we had 46.  You are correct that the course does not hold a huge field, but the good news is that the course will weed you out.  If history repeats itself I'll bet a 1/3 of the Cat 3/4 field will not see the finish of the race.

So what's the final word on the direction?

Counterclockwise, like last year; starting at the bottom of the course and heading uphill.  Repeat until you explode.

That's hard to say.  A lot depends on your particular strengths as a rider.  Maybe you are a sprinter or a climber, etc.  Since it's your first race it might be good to settle in for the first few laps and get a feel for the pace of the race.  If you are in a group at the end be ready for the pace to pick up in the last couple laps.  It may not, but you should prepare for it.
