I think the share the road signs need to change. You get use to seeing the same sign and you end up not paying attention to it. I got in an argument with a coworker that said cyclist have know business being on the street. He said he hates it when you get stuck behind a cyclist. I tried explaining to him that if he gets behing a cyclist the worst thing that happens is he gets to his destination maybe a couple of seconds later. His comeback was we should all be run off the road. When people get stuck behind me I always go out of my way and wave at them when they pass. They usally wave back. I think it goes a long way. Dave Zabriskie has a new foundation called Yield to Life. I sent in a donation last week. Check it out google Yield to Life.

I defintiely agree about the road signs. They are hardly noticable these days. You just get so used to seeing them. But those big colorful signs they have for "Bike St. Louis", those stand out to me, I always notice when a new one goes up. It would be pretty neat if a group like Yield for Life could get enough donations to have TV commercials that said that bikes are as legal on the roads as cars, and explain it in a few words. I think people seeing/hearing that would really make a difference. It just seems like a lot of people have no clue that bikes have a spot on the road.

...it seems that no week passes by without somebody making serious attempt on my life. I am not sure if it is just stupidity (on my part or them), or people don’t expect you on the road these days.

Niether case (stupidity or not expecting you on the road) is an attempt on your life. An unfortunate and reckless near miss, perhaps, but to imply intent is impossible to determine. And if their intent is to take your life, then they are a bad aim.

In the utmost unfortunate event you are hit does it really matter what is the intent.

Yes.

Double Yes.

Accidents happen and it sucks when you get hit (1st hand knowledge on this) but when its a hit and run (1st hand knowledge on this also) it really sucks. My ex wife was hit in downtown STL by an old guy that didn't see her, she turned left when she had the away and she couldn't alter course so she got smashed. The guy stopped and called 911 and she was rushed to the hospital and after a few months was healthy again. When I was hit in GA I was found on the side of road broken and bloody trying to ride my bike which had the fork sheered off. When asked if I knew where i was I responded "judging by your accent somewhere in the south." I had internal bleeding and had lost consciousness and was airlifted to Atlanta.

Obviously some of you have been on the road much longer, and Dan you did this for living. What I meant is the end result is almost the same, but of course I will be mad like hell if I ever know that someone does such horrible thing on purpose. Hell I will be mad like hell if If am doing everything to be visible and then somebody claims he did not see me and it is not his fault.
However, stopping after an accident is not optional, it is mandated by all kind of laws, and failing to stop after an accident carry some jail time.

...I hate cars. I really do! Too damn many cars! :-(
Scrapped the minivan, huh?

No, but my minivan is not on the roads every damned day either. More than I can say for most people's cars! :-(

Second job of Govt: Protect people from each other
But it must never become the job of Govt to protect people from themselves!
