National Millennium Trail
Masterpiece in the making. . .
The Mississippi River Trail is a 10-state cycling route in process of development. It travels over 2000 continuous miles between the headwaters of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca, Minnesota and the Gulf of Mexico, winding its way through the states of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Cycling route signs featuring the "MRT' logo, identify the route along those segments that are complete. Route markers eventually will serve as the unifying identity along the entire
trail.
Linkages with local trail systems that
establish connections with trail development activities in cities and towns adjacent to or near the MRT. Linkages with other regional and national trails.
Hospitality, including a network of overnight motel/hotel accommodations, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants focused on serving traveling cyclists along the MRT.
 |
The goal of the MRT development is to create a basic route that is safe, scenic, and as close to the river as possible. From the beginning, however, planners have
recognized that development of a world-class route requires major enhancements to the route over many years and
involves both public and private sector efforts. The ultimate vision is of a route that is off-road as much as
possible along abandoned rail corridors and other landscape features. Where necessary it will be on low-volume rural roads and paved shoulders along bikeable routes. Further enhancements can be
visualized as layers are added to the basic route:
Landscaping, overviews including focal points along the MTR will be landscaped as points of interest.
Cyclist-friendly amenities such as way-side pull-offs, where cyclists can get water,
enjoy picnicking and find simple privies; and camping facilities that range from highly developed to primitive to small shelters on privately owned property.
Natural, historical and cultural signs and sites that tell the
'story' of the Mississippi River and the diverse people who over the millennia have called the great valley home.
